The new facility spans over 4,600 square feet and signifies the completion of Phase I of Melton’s Birmingham facility. “Opening of the Birmingham terminal marks the completion of Phase I of Melton's three-phase construction plan for the Birmingham location,” states Melton President Bob Peterson. “Over the next four years, Melton will construct a 10,000 square foot full-service maintenance facility and a 5,000 square foot driver recruitment and training building. Higher revenue per truck and continued focus on safety and cost controls allowed us to improve our operating ratio by 240 basis points to 92.2% in the September 2005 quarter from 94.6% in the September 2004 quarter. In addition, the September 2005 operating ratio of 92.2% represents a sequential improvement over the June 2005 operating ratio of 92.9%, we define as total operating expenses, net of fuel surcharges, as a percentage of freight revenue.
